Chennai, Apr 22:

Most often visually challenged women, who put up shops at railway platforms, are cheated by the buyers. Some errant men who escort them to cross the road are abusing them by tightly holding hands. Insurance agents are humiliating and not ready to provide insurance policies to them by saying that there are many chances for the visually challenged people to get hurt on road. These facts came to light when a group of victimized visually challenged women came together to vent their anger in a discussion session organized by ‘Nandini voice for deprived’ trust in Chennai.

Expressing the oppression with tears, 33-year-old Meenakshi said, “Though I am a graduate and working as a teacher in a government school, the bank staffs are asking me to accompany a person with vision to draw salary from my account. I have been struggling to get a housing loan for the past three years. Blaming on my blindness, no bank is ready to provide me loan.”

Bastha Bibi, a platform dweller, said, “I can identify the rupees note with to its size. When a buyer picked up ten mirrors and other nick-nacks worth Rs.100 and paid Rs.50, I refused to receive the money. He complained that I am charging more and yelled at me in abusive language. When other traders intervened, he returned the stuff and left in huff, she said.

There are several cases where house owners refused to provide rented house only because of our visual impairment claim Malathi and her friends who are postgraduates.
“There is no care taking center for visually challenged single women. If we seek rented houses, the house owners tend to close their doors for no reason. We are living a self-sustainable life, but we are not provided any opportunity for a decent living” she fumed.

With the elections around the corner, just wanted share some interesting statistics about the criminal charges against our "so called leaders" contesting. And when an organization is so particular to recruit a clean chit candidate onto their rolls, why is this rule not being looked at recruiting or rather nominating clean chit candidates.
When all other functions require people with good education background and clean chit on all criminal records why not the same rule for applicable for candidates contesting in elections???.... An organisation that is trying to prevent people with criminal charges against them from contesting the coming general elections has started with a look at the sitting lawmakers.Of the 543 Members of Parliament in the Lok Sabha, 123 or 24 per cent are criminals. Giving a state-wise breakup, the National Election Watch, which has tied up with activists and concerned citizens to launch a campaign and website (nocriminals.org) with details of MPs and contestants with criminal backgrounds, said among large states, Maharashtra and Bihar led the table with 40 per cent of the MPs from these states having some criminal charge against them.
While 19 of Maharashtra’s 48 MPs have criminal antecedents, of Bihar’s 40 MPs 16 have a criminal record.India’s largest state Uttar Pradesh, which has 80 MPs, comes in secondwith 29 per cent. Among the mid sized and large states, Assam is the cleanest with none of the 14 MPs having any criminal charge against them. Giving a party wise break up, the NEW statistics showed the Rashtriya Janata Dal and the Samajwadi Party were the worst. 11 MPs each of the RJD’s 24 MPs (46 %) and SP’s 36 MPs (31 %) face criminal charges.
The Bahujan Samaj Party has 19 MPs of which 8 are tainted (42 %). Among the Big Three, the Bharatiya Janata Party fared the worst, with 29 of its 138 being tainted (21 %). 26 of the Congress’s 145 MPs (18 %) have criminal cases and 7 of the 43 Communist Party of India-Marxist MPs (16 %) have cases against them. Among parties that have MPs in the double digits, Biju Janata Dal is the cleanest, the statistics showed, with only one of its 11 MPs having criminal cases against him. With new emergence of unwanted crops like Pramod Muthalik, and the ever Saffron hero Thackery it would only add to woes of Indian politics.
